I arrived in Kontum in 1970 and was wounded on April the 19th 1970. I was a co-pilot for William Stepp who was also wounded and later died in Japan. I currently live in Port Neches, Texas and work for Entergy Corp., a utility company.

When I rediscovered this site recently, I noticed a couple of messages from family members of Jon Roche asking for information concerning the crash of 66-16323 on 1/8/69... I was flying on that mission and remember it well... But I can't remember who else was flying that day at FOB... If anyone remembers... contact me... so that I may give these kids as accurate an account as possible...
Thanks again to the WEBMASTERS...

I was in the 170th from Aug'67-Jan'70. I crewed BIkini 110 and I recall it being the 1st Peanuts chacter call sign Charlie Brown. Went to the Buc's in '68 and suffered a hard landing in 66-15140 that sent me to the hospital in Japan for 5 months. I flew FOB as slick and a Gun, also caught most of the battle for Dak To. Hats off to Mike Pritchard and Gene Wentworth who have gone on before us. Clear Left

I had the honor to be the last Company Commander of the 170th in Vietnam, and then the last man on the 170th's Morning Report as we closed out in March,1971. The US Army has never had a finer team of men doing a more dangerous mission in combat than the Bikinis. I am proud to have been included.

I was a crew chief with the 170th from Oct'70 to Feb'71, crewed slick 69-15135 most of the time. Isaac Mahi was the gunner as well as Lubbick (sp?). Two of the pilots I flew with are in Iraq now, CW4 Jerry King (okie) and CW Bill Watson, both are still flying. CW4 Ty Simmons got back from Iraq last spring. It's good to see that a lot of the 170th guys are checking in. A thank you is in order for Henry for his time and effort with this site. Take care all.

[126] William (Bill) Stratton |
Flew with the 170th from May 70 to deactivation as a crew chief. I flew with both "Guns" and 1st platoon.
I would like to contact WO Nelson, Mike Roulette (gunner) or anyone that remembers the ("sniffer mission") day my bird took a hit that blew up the miniguns hydraulic and electrical couplings on my side. All the birds with us took hits. Capt. Knight's Bird (Spl. Downs - The Black Knight crew chief) lost power on the way out and went into the tree tops before recovering enough power to get above them. I took shrapnel in the left leg from the couplings being hit and have never gotten a purple heart for it.

David Hooper Buc 036 (170th YaBB Forum uh1c69), I remember, but none of the email addresses are still valid

Was flight engineer on Jolly 29 that faithful day 15 April 1970.
Had spoken with Col Don Summers several times before he passed on. Wonderful man.
The JG forces lost 3 hero's that day and after 34 years I still think about them.
Next time you say a prayer for your fallen comarads mention Capt Bell, Tsgt
Hartzel and SSgt Davis as well.I know they'll appreciate it. Thank you

Was flight engineer on Jolly Green 29 on 15 April 1970. We had scrambled from Da Nang with little to go on except there was a UH1 down with round eyes on board. On the third attempt the hydraulic systems had been shot out and Jolly Green 27 departed area on fire impacting at base of the hill. Three brave men lost their lives that day trying to help others. They were Capt Travis Scott (P), Tsgt Gerald Harzel (FE), and SSgt Luther Davis (PJ), Maj Travis Wolford (CP) was only survivor. I've read your web site and truly you guys were the bravest of the brave. When honoring your lost brother next time please say a prayer for my lost brothers who tried their level best to bring them home to you...
Thank You
