My name is Jon Patrick Roche. I am the son of Richard Mathew Roche, who is the brother of a pilot of UH-1D 66-16323. I was named after him, he was my uncle... I browsed your site that you have on the internet and was looking for a picture of him and maybe his crew. Everyone in his crew died except a man who was on medical leave and survived. I have tried many times to contact him but i cant get any information. I never met my uncle but from what I hear he was a great man. I am originally from his home town but I'm currently in Phoenix Arizona. If you could tell me anything about him or his crew at all would you please return my email.
sincerely,
Jon Patrick Roche

I was a crew chief with the 119th Assault Helicopter Company from Jan'68 till Sep'69. During March and April of 1969 our unit along with the 170th and 189th flew support to units of the 1st Brigde of the 4th Infantry Division in the Plei-Trap Valley.

"The War Above the Trees" is a book which I have written which details those 45
days of "Operation Wayne Grey". It was written with the help of my personal
journal, After Action Reports and eyewittness accounts from both air crews and
troops which were on the ground. This was another unknown battle which was fought
in the Central Highlands between 1966 and 1970. Any crew member regardless of
their time in-country will relate to the events which happened.

After 35 years I thought it was time that some of the questions that we had
should be answered. Trafford Publishing is an On-Demand Printer. You can preview
the book at the web page URL which is posted. Any questions or comments will be
answered by e-mail.

Thank You.

I was a writer at a Macv unit up north.
Getting into a Hue I asked the gunner what he thought about dieing.
Then I asked him to write something down for me that evening.
This is what he wrote.
Does anyone know if he made it out?

DIEING
I WAS NOT AFRAID TO DIE
BUT OF HOW I DIED
TAKING WITH ME THE OTHER THREE
IF
I DIED WHILE THE HUE TRIED
DUSTOFFS
MEANT MORE THAN THREE
IF
I DIED WHILE THE HUE TRIED
ON THE GROUND
WAITED THE BRAVE AND WOUNDED MEN OF THE INFANTRY
FOR ME
AND
THE OTHER THREE
THE HUE THEY LISTENED TO HEAR
THE DISTANT SOUND WOPPING THE AIR
THE HUE THEY WAITED TO SEE
HOVERING STRONG AND FREE
NOT AFRAID
NOT FORCED TO FLEE
PROTECTED BY THE CREWCHIEF AND ME
STEADIED BY PILOTS
BRAVER THAN ME
I DID NOT DIE
NOR
THE OTHER THREE
NOR
THE INFANTRY
THATíS OUR JOB YOU SEE

My Father, Thomas A. Kramer is a member of the 170th. He never told me, nor my brother and sister, much about his experiences in Vietnam. One day my father sent me an e-mail with a URL linking to this page with the following short message: "This was my old outfit in Vietnam. Check it out!!!" After browsing this web-site and getting into the pictures and texts written by other members of the 170th, I have come away with a sense of pride and deep respect for my father and all of his fellow veterans.
